More Fun in my Inbox
Howdy Kevin, how are you?
I know there’s a good chance that you might not even fully read this message (or reply to it, for that matter), but I needed to vent.
Just a quick tip for you — Next time you review a game, could you please actually, you know, review it? Words simply cannot describe how amazingly painful it was to watch your “review” for Condemned 2: Bloodshot.
Were you out of ideas? Were you severely close to the deadline? Did you suffer some sort of brain damage prior to the review?
A quick recap of what needs to be present in a review:
*Unbiased opinion
*Unbiased presentation of various game features and mechanics
*Unbiased list of pros and cons
*Other general information that is provided to the viewer in order for them to make up their OWN mind
What’s more, a video review should be nothing more than an audible text review, coupled with video. Had we transformed your video “review” into a text review, we would have been left with absolute gibberish.
What happened to the plot? The story telling? The script? The voice acting? The graphics? The gameplay? The audio? Did you forget to review all that?
What SHOULDN’T be in a review:
*3 minute montages of various game clips that hold no significance to the actual review
*Stupid attempts at what can only be described as a “YouTube’esque” videos
*Closing 15 second statements that are something like “This is a good game that will leave you with memories”
When I watch or read a review for a game, I’m doing so in order to decide whether or not I should purchase a game. I don’t watch video reviews for pathetic attempts at horror, comedy, or any other nonsense you can think of.
I suggest that you make your way to GameTrailers.com, and observe their review for Condemned 2: Bloodshot. Take some notes, and try a little harder next time, because “reviews” (and I use that term loosely) like yours are the reason why GameSpot is slowly, but surely, turning into the piece of trash that we currently have today.
Best Regards,
*****

I’ll have the author of this message know that last week’s CAT scan was conclusive: the brain damage is only mild.

Hahaha. Nice. You know, sometimes, I wonder about people…
My god, are people STILL harping about that Condemned video review?
Totally ridiculous. You’d think these people have ever watched Alex Navarro’s 24: The Game video review or Big Rigs:Over the Road Racing review.
That video review totally captured the spirit of the game. Maybe reading is just too much to ask anymore.
I agree with Matt. I was a little disappointed with the video review as well but it was a fun change of pace. Also, I don’t mind actually reading my reviews as that person obviously does.
He really needs to lighten up. And learn to read. Its really not as hard as some people make it look.
“the reason why GameSpot is slowly, but surely, turning into the piece of trash that we currently have today.”
How can it slowly be turning into something that it already is?
While I personally feel that the video review in question was a little too long, if any user wants a full review, read the actual text. That’s what they’re there for. Video reviews can have as much fun as they want as long as there is a proper text review to accompany it.
And I think it goes without saying that Van Ord’s reviews are the best on Gamespot.
Actually, Van Ord’s are almost the ONLY reviews on GameSpot.
Though I mostly agree with the email, the video review was rather poor. I was hoping for a more constructive response from Kevin though, considering it was constructive critisism that he received.
Chauncey, I’ve explained that video review and accepted plenty of good-natured criticism until I was blue in the face over it. This was meant to be a lighthearted look at the kind of messages I receive over various things.
As it is, telling me I am suffering from brain damage and am single-handedly responsible, by way of a single video review, of turning GameSpot into trash isn’t constructive in my book
Kevin, I have some bad news. ***** has outlawed fun. Take down every unserious video review from GameSpot. Just wanted to let you know.

Well I suppose it’s further evidence that a lot of people really don’t like to read. There was nothing wrong with that video review. If you didn’t like it, you just didn’t like it. It shouldn’t be necessary to exactly replicate the print view that exists *right* below the video link. At that stage, then what’s the point of the written review? Also saying that e-mail has “constructive” feedback is a little off the mark. Constructive criticism is supposed to be helpful and supportive, not snide cruel.
Shame on you, Kevin! You should no better than to try and do something different and interesting! You should know better than think that people can actually read!
Yeah we should all go to Gametrailers, because their reviews are “top notch”……
Ok now that I got the sarcasm out of the way. I really like your reviews Kevin, and this is just another example of retarded idiots who are usually fanboyish morons that do not have anything better to do except bitch at people who do not let people hear what they want to hear.
I’ve supported GS and its people through thick and thin and personally I just ignore the people who bash me for it, because I like something different that isn’t the same dribble that they get day in and out. It reminds me of the idiots who don’t buy good games and hate on people that do like good games but will stay playing one game because “ITZ TEH ROXXARZ!!!111one1!! LULZ”.
I guess I’m done ranting, and keep up the good work Kevin
My only complaint is the you said that you could throw someone over the balcony, instead of a balcony. I’m a nerd.
your website is very bad
